Richard became Ulster Orchestra Managing Director in February 2016, having previously been General Manager of the BBC Philharmonic for 10 years, where his achievements included overseeing £20m of local authority funding, re-positioning the orchestra in MediaCity in Salford, and increasing the orchestra’s international profile through tours to major cities.
Richard began his professional career as a bassoonist in the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester before becoming its Education Director and then Head of Artistic Planning.
During his time there he was instrumental in re-building the orchestra’s artistic standing with the public and funders, as well as developing and delivering initiatives with communities, schools and special needs groups. Prior to joining the BBC, Richard was Head of Programming and Planning at the Royal Northern College of Music. Richard has taken on a range of projects through his company, Wigley Arts Management Ltd, including artistic management for the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and leading the Association of British Orchestra’s Find Your Way mentoring scheme for emerging leaders.
